William Rogers silver-plated oval serving tray with pierced gallery border.

History & Background

William Rogers was one of the most recognized names in American silver plate, with the Rogers family name appearing on silver-plated hollowware from the 1840s onward. Various companies used the Rogers name — including Rogers Bros., Wm. Rogers Mfg. Co., and others — creating a complex genealogy familiar to collectors. Serving trays were an important part of Victorian and Edwardian entertaining, used to carry tea services, drinks, and food. The pierced gallery border on this example is a hallmark of quality-level production from this period.
