A vintage black jasperware table lighter with neoclassical reliefs by Wedgwood.

Josiah Wedgwood and his pottery workers made fine ceramic goods in Staffordshire, England, beginning in the eighteenth century. They created these decorative table pieces to bring classical art into middle-class homes during the mid-twentieth century revival of neoclassical interior design. The distinctive unglazed stoneware body was produced by mixing metallic oxides into the clay base to create solid colors, which were then decorated with separately molded white clay reliefs applied by hand before firing. Smokers used these portable lighters on living room coffee tables and office desks to light cigarettes and cigars during social gatherings. The ceramic housing served as an outer decorative sleeve fitted around a standard mechanical lighter insert, usually manufactured by specialized lighter companies like Ronson. As domestic smoking habits declined toward the end of the twentieth century, these decorative smoking accessories fell out of everyday use and shifted from functional household items into collectible display pieces.
