Tonala pottery is one of the most distinctive and celebrated folk art traditions in Mexico, deeply rooted in pre-Hispanic ceramic techniques that evolved over centuries. Following the Spanish conquest, European glazing and painting methods were introduced, blending indigenous clay-working with majolica and tin-glaze traditions. By the mid-20th century, master ceramists and local artisans in Jalisco popularized whimsical animal figurines hand-painted with stylized floral and avian motifs.
