Satsuma Crackle-Glaze Peacock Jar

This is a vintage mid-20th-century Japanese Satsuma lidded ceramic ginger jar.

Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma Province of southern Kyushu, Japan, during the late 16th century, initially produced by Korean potters brought over by the local lord. By the 19th century, particularly after being showcased at international expositions in Paris and Vienna, Satsuma pottery became immensely popular in the West for its distinctive ivory-colored crackle glaze and elaborate polychrome and gilt decoration. Traditional motifs frequently included noble birds such as peacocks and pheasants surrounded by dense floral arrangements like chrysanthemums and peonies. While early pieces were strictly hand-crafted for the Japanese aristocracy, the 20th century saw a vast production of decorative export wares featuring transfer-printed outlines enhanced by hand-applied enamels and gilding. These lidded temple jars and ginger jars served as quintessential decorative accents in Western households throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century.
