Set of six silver-plated knife rests in the form of seated cats.
History & Background
Knife rests were a staple of Victorian and Edwardian formal dining, used to keep knife blades off the tablecloth between courses. Figural knife rests in the shapes of animals, vegetables, and geometric forms were especially fashionable. Cat-form examples are among the most charming and collectible. Sets of six or more in matching condition are uncommon and represent a complete table setting. Silver-plated examples from the late 19th to early 20th century were produced by manufacturers throughout England and the United States.
